Regenerative Neurophysiology

Ottosson Group

Our Research

The overall purpose of our research is to generate specific and disease-relevant interneurons using neuronal reprogramming techniques.

Interneurons are specific neuronal cells in the brain that are paramount for neural function. Loss or dysfunction of interneurons in the cortex is implicated in several brain disorders such as psychiatric diseases. Recent studies suggest a possibility to tackling psychiatric disorders using subtype specific interneurons.

Our research uses advanced technology to generate interneurons from novel cell sources with the aim to extensively define the subtype and function of these and their potential for therapeutic use. For this we are using reprogramming technology in animal models or human stem cell culture system, together with electrophysiology, RNA sequencing, tracing technologies and cell specific manipulation.

Aims

  • To generate subtype-specific interneurons using neuronal reprogramming techniques and assess their integration and function in the brain.
  • To apply these protocols to the human system and generate subtype-specific interneurons from human somatic cells and assess their potential for cell replacement strategies as well as for disease-modelling.

Impact

Our research aims towards a further development of interneurons cell therapy using direct reprogramming for brain disorders such as psychiatric diseases for which there currently is poor or no treatment.

Our projects will further bring out significant new insights into the neuronal mechanism behind interneurons relevant diseases and will allow for drug screening.
