About

Lund Stem Cell Center

Lund Stem Cell Center (SCC) at Lund University is a world-leading center for stem cell research with the mission of transferring basic science findings to the clinic in order to make a fundamental difference to improve human health. The center consists of 35 outstanding research groups, all performing fundamental, multidisciplinary research, mostly within the fields of neurology and hematology.

Research

Research at Lund SCC is diverse and covers several aspects of developmental and stem cell biology, including but not limited to restorative neurology, hematopoiesis, endocrine cell differentiation, lung bioengineering and bone formation processes. This research is pioneering towards development and innovation of treatment of neurological diseases, blood disorders, cancer and diabetes, among others. Lund SCC utilises a unique selection of research models, (including mice and tissue culture cells) as well as several in-house technology platforms (see core facilities) to address our research questions.

Strategy

One major goal of Lund SCC is to become a major force in translational research and career development in biomedical research.

In particular, during the past ten years our interdisciplinary approach has strengthened significantly with the support of the Stategic Research Area “StemTherapy”; particularly in terms of expanding our technological advances and integration of new, young principal investigators.

Organisation

Currently, Lund SCC is a constellation of 33 research groups; totalling over 250 employees, represented by over 40 nationalities. SCC members are employed at several different departments and divisions at the Faculty of Medicine at Lund University and many have links to Skåne University Hospital. The center is managed by Director Professor Zaal Kokaia, Deputy coordinator Professor Jonas Larsson, together with its own steering group. General overseeing of the center and organisation of events are managed by Research Coordinator Claire McKay. Finances are handled by economist Hanna [dot] Barjosef [at] med [dot] lu [dot] se (Hanna Barjosef). Lund SCC’s Research School is directed by Executive Director Christine Karlsson together with its own Research School Board.
