Workshop | Connecting Minds: Navigating Isolation and Building Belonging in Academic Life
Join us for this engaging workshop on "Connecting Minds: Navigating Isolation and Building Belonging in Academic Life" with Desiree Dickerson, PhD!
Organized by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, this event is open to all members of the Lund Stem Cell Center community, providing a platform for meaningful round-table discussions and the development of essential skills for navigating academic challenges in today's world.
Academic life can often feel isolating for many of us, and there are plenty of reasons why. Some reasons are inherent in the current academic system, such as forced mobility and high workloads. For others, the isolation stems from a lack of belonging, the feeling of not having found ‘your people’, or a sense of not fitting in. For some, interacting with others can make us feel anxious, or just unsure how to engage.
But we are human. We are social beings. We need connections to be healthy and to function to our fullest potential. So, how do we shift this space? In this interactive workshop, we explore:
- Isolation: the many reasons it is so prevalent in academia and the physiological and psychological reasons why it is so bad for us.
- Connection: the benefits it provides to our mental health, well-being and performance and the various forms of social connection that can benefit us.
- Belonging: developing techniques to navigate challenging interactions and to help us create inclusive environments where we can all feel a sense of belonging.
Please note that limited seats are available and that registration is required.
