Lund Stem Cell Center is pleased to announce that Els Mansell has been awarded a Junior Research Grant 2021 worth €150.000,00 by the European Hematology Association (EHA) after a rigorous selection process. Dr. Mansell joins a network of over 110 distinguished researchers who have received EHA Research Funding in the past.

EHA Research Grants support talented early career researchers in advancing their career towards becoming leaders of research groups. These grants are intended for basic and translational lab-based research in hematology. Novel and relevant translational parts of a clinical trial can also be funded in compelling circumstances.

Dr. Mansell’s research focuses on the relationship between metabolic state and lineage fate of stem cells, during steady state hematopoiesis and during ageing and disease.

"We don’t yet have a full appreciation of how stem cells make lineage choices. In this project, we will use metabolism as our angle to interrogate this, aiming to apply our findings to clinical scenarios in which lineage-balance is disrupted" explains Dr. Mansell. "It’s a huge honour to receive the EHA junior grant and I am very grateful for the opportunity to further my research career in this exciting field.’’

It was the blend of both clinical and laboratory work that attracted many of us to hematology and we know that advances in treatment for our patients come from fuller understanding of the pathophysiology of these diseases. Therefore, almost nothing is more important to us at EHA than ensuring the advancement of the next generation of clinicians and scientists in our field. The early steps of a career in research are often the most difficult ones and it is for this reason that we have invested in mentoring programs for our young scientists and clinician scientists, and we are delighted to have increased our grant funding to be able to make a larger contribution towards supporting early career development. I am therefore delighted to be able to congratulate these award winners for their successful application and be able to help their careers in steps towards independence.  We fully expect these very talented individuals to go on to become leaders in their field and also to present their work at future EHA congresses.’’  says EHA President John Gribben, MD DSc FRCP FRCPath FMedSci.

The European Hematology Association (EHA) promotes excellence in patient care, research and education in hematology. EHA envisions a world without blood disorders by connecting hematologists worldwide, supporting their career development and research, harmonizing hematology education and advocating the interests of hematology and hematologists in the European arena.
