Medical law and legal aspects of advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMP), MEMRJ0F

A course offered by the National ATMP Research School - 1.5 ECTS

This course is a freestanding course in the subject area of Advanced Therapeutic Medicinal Products (ATMP) and is given in conjunction with the Faculty of Law at Lund University. The course is aimed at PhD students, researchers, and PhD/teaching staff with an interest in ATMPs.

Course Content


The course focuses on the Swedish, EU and international regulation of ATMPs. It provides an introduction to medical law at the Swedish, EU and international levels and an overview of:

  • Key principles of medical ethics and their legal significance.
  • Health care responsibilities and patient rights.
  • Patient safety, science and proven experience.
  • Data protection, public access to information and confidentiality.
  • Legislation and its application including the entering into contracts for ATMPs.

Course Design


The course is offered as a distance learning course. Teaching takes the form of lectures, group exercises and individual work (e.g. preparation for seminars and presentations of legal analyses).

Compulsory learning activities, include:

  • Group activity 1 Applying the law
  • Group activity 2 Applying the law
  • Absence from compulsory teaching activities can be compensated for with other learning activities.

Assessment is based on individual written assignments in the form of project work and oral assignments in groups.

We welcome candidates from all faculties in Sweden and internationally who are involved in research areas related to ATMPs. Applicants should be registered as a PhD student or have already been awarded a PhD in a relevant subject. Please note that PhD students at the National ATMP Research School will be given priority for admission.
