About the Programme

RAMP-UP: Regenerative Medicine and Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products – United for PhD Excellence

RAMP-UP is an international doctoral programme dedicated to training the next generation of researchers in regenerative medicine and advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) - a new class of medical treatments based on cells, genes, or tissues.

These advanced therapies are transforming how we treat, alleviate, and cure diseases, from cancers to degenerative diseases and rare genetic disorders. Yet despite their promise, access to these treatments remains limited largely due to their high cost and complex production processes.

RAMP-UP aims to address these challenges. By connecting academia, healthcare, regulatory agencies, and industry, RAMP-UP is training a new generation of researchers to lead the development and implementation of advanced therapies from the lab bench to the patient's bedside. Through interdisciplinary, international, and intersectoral training of a new scientific workforce, the programme supports a sustainable future for ATMPs across Europe and globally.

The Regenerative Medicine and Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products – United for PhD Excellence (RAMP-UP) doctoral programme is coordinated by Lund University’s Lund Stem Cell Center and delivered in close partnership with Leiden University Medical Center, Hannover Medical School, and the Technical University of Denmark.

Together, these four leading institutions form the core of a Europe-wide training network that includes nearly 30 associated partners, representing every stage of the ATMP value chain.

This programme is funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, part of the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation framework, reflecting the programme’s scientific ambition, societal relevance, and international scope.

Vision & Mission

Our Mission

To establish a collaborative, innovative, and interdisciplinary PhD programme in regen-erative medicine and ATMPs that trains professionals across the full ATMP development pipeline, from invention and clinical translation to regulation and commercialisation.

Our Vision

To create a European ecosystem for education and innovation in regenerative medicine and ATMPs, which brings together key actors to secure a leading international position in the field. By working across disciplines and sectors, RAMP-UP aims to support the accelerated development, implementation, and accessibility of advanced therapies, benefitting patients and society.

Programme Structure:

The RAMP-UP doctoral programme will begin in autumn 2026. In total, 55 PhD candidates will be enrolled in two cohorts and will take part in a joint training programme with a strong European and interdisciplinary dimension.

Key features of the programme include:

  • Interdisciplinary doctoral research projects
  • Kick-off meetings and cohort-building activities across partner institutions
  • International summer and winter schools, supported by associate partners and including team-based projects to simulate the development of an ATMP from discovery to the clinic. The three main themes will be:
    • Theme 1 – Invention and innovation in Regenerative Medicine and Advanced Therapies
    • Theme 2 - Clinical Translation, GMP Processes, Technical production
    • Theme 3 - Commercialization and ELSI (Ethical, Legal, and Societal Implications)
  • Secondments supported by partner organizations in healthcare, industry, and regulatory sectors

This structure ensures that RAMP-UP graduates are scientific researchers who can lead innovation across the full ATMP value chain. This means that they will be suitable for academic careers, and also for various roles in healthcare innovation, biotech, pharmaceutical companies, policy, and regulation.
