Professor Sandra Lindstedt is a senior consultant in thoracic surgery specializing in heart and lung transplantation, with a long-standing interest in lung transplantation related research, post-transplant complications and lung regeneration.
A Wallenberg Molecular Medicine Clinical researcher, Sandra has strong collaborative ties with the Wagner group. Together they have developed novel methods of isolating different lung stem cell populations and new techniques to create precision cut organ slices for the study of lung disease and regeneration.
The Lindstedt research group has created porcine models of lung injuries such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, the broad category of respiratory disease for severe COVID-19 patients. They are currently working with a number of collaborators from industry and academia, including the Scheding research group at Lund Stem Cell Center, to develop mesenchymal stromal cell therapies within these models. The group is interested in pursuing this research with acute respiratory distress syndrome, as well as other settings of lung regeneration following lung injury such as primary graft dysfunction after lung transplantation. The aim of Sandra’s research is to increase the number of lungs suitable for transplantation but also to reduce complications after lung transplantation by increasing the tolerability of the new organ and bring this research towards clinical applications.
Finally, the Lindstedt group also has several ongoing collaborations with other members of Lund Stem Cell Center. These include projects with the Magnusson and Pereira research groups, where they are studying lung cancer stem cells.
Welcome to Lund Stem Cell Center Sandra!
