Paper-Boost Grants

- Part of the internal StemTherapy Funding Initiatives

The StemTherapy Paper-Boost Grant scheme is designed to support research projects that are close to publication in high-impact journals but require additional experimental work or short-term personnel support to successfully address reviewer comments.

The aim of the scheme is to remove financial or resource bottlenecks that may otherwise delay or limit the publication of high-quality research, thereby strengthening the visibility and impact of StemTherapy-supported research.

Call Details: Paper-Boost Grants

Eligibility Criteria

  • The applicant must be a StemTherapy (ST) Principal Investigator (PI).
  • The application must be based on a manuscript under revision in a high-impact journal, currently defined as being on the Nature Index List.
  • Reviewer comments and editorial advice must already have been received. These must state an invitation to re-submit, and clearly outlining the additional work required for resubmission
  • The requested support must be directly linked to addressing these reviewer comments and enabling timely resubmission

Scope of Funding

Funds may be used for:

  • Additional experimental analyses required during revision
  • Prioritised access to core facilities or specialised technologies
  • Short-term extension of employment for a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher directly involved in the study (up to 6 months)

Funding Level and Duration

  • Maximum funding: 500,000 SEK per project
  • Project duration: Short-term, aligned with revision timelines

Application and Evaluation Process

  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
  • Applications should be submitted to the StemTherapy Coordinator (see contact details on this page).
  • The Coordinator* will distribute each application to two relevant ST PIs** for evaluation. The selection of these are on the discretion of coordinator and can involve discussion with applicant and/or other colleagues.
  • Decisions will be made based on the written assessments from journal and description of PI (max 1 page) what is need and why, with the aim of ensuring a rapid turnaround time. If needed, the two reviewing PIs can invite the applicant for a dialogue and clarifications.

*In the case the coordinator applies, the vice coordinator will handle the process.

** Since these applications are non-competitive, i.e., assessed individually rather than ranked against one another, and are already informed by external journal peer review, including both reviewer reports and editorial guidance, their evaluation requires field-specific expertise to assess the likelihood of success. The two StemTherapy PIs appointed as reviewers should therefore work as closely aligned as possible to the scientific field of the application. This will both strengthen the assessment and enable reviewers to provide constructive, expert-level feedback to the applying PI.

Please note: Given the relatively small size of our environment, it is not feasible to fully avoid potential conflicts of interest; instead, we must rely on the professionalism of our colleagues and the integrity of the review process. Therefore, the only CoI criteria that will be used is that the assessing PIs are not co-authors of the manuscript.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be assessed based on:

  • Likelihood of successful publication in a high-impact journal
  • Feasibility of completing the requested work within the proposed timeline
  • Clear linkage between requested funding and reviewer comments

Expected/Measurable Outcomes

  • Resubmission and publication in high-impact journals (short term)
  • Acceptance of manuscript
  • Increased visibility and citation impact of StemTherapy (long term)
