Presentation techniques for scientists

Overview

In this 1.5-day interactive workshop we provide knowledge and strategies to communicate research effectively, both orally and visually, to make a lasting impression on a variety of audiences. The workshop is highly interactive, with exercises and the opportunity to present.

Content

The workshop will cover all steps required to create, design and deliver a coherent, concise and compelling presentation, including:

1. Narrative

Planning, framing and structuring compelling scientific stories:
• Understanding and adapting to the audience
• Framing scientific stories
• Story techniques and narrative tools

2. Design

Techniques for visual storytelling:
• Look and feel
• Color and typography
• Form and space
• Information hierarchy and layout
• Graphic design

3. Delivery

Techniques for an engaging and confident delivery:
• Public speaking anxiety
• Connecting with your audience
• Presenter’s role and authenticity
• Verbal and non-verbal communications
• Practicing delivery in front of a live audience

4. Stage

An opportunity to practice in front of a live audience:
• Feedback from the other workshop participants and the course leaders
• Recorded version of your own presentation

Lectures, exercises, discussions and instructor feedback

Target audience

This workshop is open to anyone at Lund Stem Cell Center interested in learning how to plan and deliver compelling presentations. Priority is given to PhD students, postdocs, and staff scientists.
