Patient access and health economics aspects of ATMPs
A course offered by the National ATMP Research School - 1.5 ECTS
This course, offered by the University of Gothenburg, gives a basic understanding of the economic aspects of advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs). Participants will learn how to describe and discuss payment models and patient access issues of ATMPs. They will also learn how to assist in designing and performing health economic evaluations and health technology assessments (HTAs) of ATMP products.
Course Content:
The aim of this course is to give students a basic understanding of health economic considerations of ATMPs. The focus is on methods for economic evaluation and HTA and patient access requirements in Sweden. With the acquired knowledge and skills, the students will be able to describe and discuss reimbursement processes and patient access considerations for ATMPs, and to contribute to the planning and implementation of economic evaluations and HTAs for ATMPs.
Students will learn to:
- Describe concepts and methods of health economics and HTA (health technology assessment)
- Identify key components of health economic evaluations and HTAs required for ATMPs
- Critically discuss requirements for reimbursement and patient access to ATMPs
- Identify and assess relevant methods, models, and concepts within economic evaluationsand HTAs of relevance for ATMPs
- Actively contribute to planning the design of economic evidence generation studies for ATMPs
- Problematize requirements for sound decision-making on ATMPs from diverse perspectivesincluding healthcare system, healthcare professionals, patients, sustainability, and society
Course Design
The course contains lectures, guest lectures, a panel discussion with guest lecturers, group and individual assignments, and seminars, mainly in distance format.

Course dates are November 16-20, with a campus networking opportunity in Gothenburg on November 20th, for the examination seminar of the individual assignment.

Registered PhD-student or PhD-degree in relevant subject. PhD-students from NationalResearch School of ATMP are given priority to admission. Participants from all Swedish and international universities that are involved in research activities related to ATMP are welcome.
